Can Solar Panels Work on a Partially Shaded Roof?

A tree, chimney or neighbouring building casts a shadow on part of your roof. Does that rule out solar panels? Not necessarily. What matters is where the shade falls, when it appears and how much usable roof space remains.

You can get a useful starting point in a few clicks: enter your address in our roof design and pricing tool, check the suggested roof outline and see an indicative installed price for a ready-made solar-and-battery package. You do not need to choose individual panels or work out a battery size first.

How does shade affect a solar layout?

Shade reduces the sunlight reaching panels and can lower electricity generation. A small shadow across one corner of a roof is different from shade covering most of it for much of the day. Trees, chimneys and nearby buildings can also cast different shadows as the sun moves and the seasons change. The Energy Saving Trust recommends assessing shade across the day and year when planning an installation.

A design may be able to use the clearer part of a roof. That is why the proposed panel layout matters more than a simple “shaded” or “unshaded” label.

What can you see online?

Our tool uses map imagery to suggest a layout for your address. Check that the pin is on your property and adjust the highlighted roof outline if needed. You can then compare complete solar-and-battery packages and see an indicative installed price, estimated annual generation and potential bill savings.

The battery can store some electricity generated by the panels for later use. It cannot make a shaded panel produce the same amount as an unshaded one, so the expected generation still matters.

What happens after the estimate?

Map imagery may miss roof details or changes to trees and surrounding buildings. Your online result is an estimate, not a final quote. If you want to take it further, a free home survey checks the practical details before the design and installed price are confirmed.
