Can an East- or West-Facing Roof Work for Solar Panels?

Many homeowners assume that solar panels only make sense on a south-facing roof. South-facing panels often produce the most electricity overall in the UK, but that does not rule out an east- or west-facing roof. The useful question is how the roof fits your home’s energy use.

Different directions, different patterns

East-facing panels tend to produce more in the morning, while west-facing panels produce more later in the day. That pattern can matter if your household is active before work or in the late afternoon. A solar-and-battery package can also store some daytime generation for later use, though storage does not erase the effect of roof direction or shading.

Look beyond the compass direction

Available space, roof pitch, nearby trees, chimneys and neighbouring buildings can matter as much as orientation. Two homes on the same street may need different layouts. Sometimes a design can use more than one roof plane; the best approach depends on what the roof can safely accommodate.
